Omnilux LED For Acne FAQ's

What is Omnilux LED for acne?

Based on the world’s leading Omnilux Medical light therapy technology, Omnilux uses light emitting diodes (LED) to reduce or eliminate mild to moderate acne vulgaris and reduce the appearance of redness and inflammation.

How does it work?

Optimized energy output and two clinically proven wavelengths of light (red 633nm and blue 415nm) work on a cellular level to kill acne-forming bacteria in the sebaceous glands.

Is it safe?

Over 40 clinical studies and nearly 20 years of experience have proven that Omnilux light therapy is safe for all skin types, with no pain and no downtime. Omnilux generates no heat or UV light and is safe for all persons over 14 years of age.

What is the treatment regimen?

We recommend a course of treatments: 2 x 20-minute treatments per week for 5 weeks. Once the initial series is complete, use Omnilux again at the earliest signs of a breakout.

Can I use Omnilux with my current skincare products?

Omnilux is compatible with most skin care routines, however we do not recommend using Omnilux in conjunction with Accutane or retinol products. We recommend speaking with your prescribing physician or Dermal Therapist before using the Omnilux with prescribed products.

Do I need eye protection with the Omnilux?

All Omnilux devices have been tested to the highest internationally recognized eye safety standards and have been deemed safe to use with eye protection.

What does Omnliux do?

One of the key bacteria responsible for acne is P.acnes. This bacteria produces natural chemicals called porphyrins, which are sensitive to light at 415nm (blue) wavelengths. If stimulated, these chemicals will neutralize the bacteria and with no bacteria present, inflammation will subside. Omnilux stimulates these chemicals and eradicates the bacteria that causes redness or inflammation associated with acne. This is combined with 633nm red light which targets acne bacteria deeper in the sebaceous glands and has anti-inflammatory properties, which minimizes the redness of acne lesions and promotes healthier skin.

Does LED light therapy actually work?

Yes. There are many independent peer-reviewed published clinical studies validating the effectiveness of LED phototherapy. Since 2003, Omnilux devices have been specifically profiled in over 40 of these studies, with applications ranging from skin rejuvenation, acne, pigmentation and other common skin conditions.

How long does it take LED light therapy to work?

Improvements in skin conditions vary, as everyone’s skin is different and requires different needs. In all cases, we recommend 2 treatments per week for 5 weeks. Once the initial series is complete, use the Omnilux again at the earliest signs of a breakout.

What does LED do to help acne?

Omnilux reduces mild to moderate acne vulgaris on the face, while also reducing the appearance of redness and inflammation.

Do LED devices really work?

Yes. The Omnilux device is FDA-cleared for efficacy and safety and uses Omnilux technology that is clinically proven to produce medical-grade results.

What does red LED light do for skin?

Red light reduces inflammation, boosts blood oxygen levels in the skin, and reduces sebum (oil) production by targeting the sebaceous gland.

What does blue LED light do for skin?

Blue light works on a cellular level to neutralize and kill acne-forming bacteria in the sebaceous glands which causes acne.

Is LED therapy safe?

All Omnilux products are FDA-cleared for safety and effectiveness for all skin types. Omnilux products conform to all US and international testing standards for safety, including eye safety.

Will light therapy increase pigmentation or exacerbate melasma?

There is significant data suggesting that the combination of red and blue light will not increase pigmentation or exacerbate melasma. Independent clinical studies show that the combination red and blue light is more efficacious and safer for darker skin types.

Will this help with psoriasis, rosacea or eczema?

There is significant data suggesting that both red and blue light successfully treat psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. However, Omnilux has not been specifically tested, nor FDA-cleared, for these conditions.

Is light therapy safe to use with Retinol or Retin A?

For users taking prescriptive levels of Retin A such as Tretinoin, we do not recommend the use of light devices. Retin A should be discontinued for at least 5 days before performing light therapy treatments. Those using cosmetics/skincare products containing retinol should read the skincare instructions carefully for warnings and precautions in relation to exposure to light. Cosmetics/skincare products containing retinol may be used with the Omnilux device if there are no precautions in relation to exposure to light.

Can I use the Omnilux if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Our products have not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Red and blue light therapy is very safe overall but because we do not have enough information about use while pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend not using unless approved by your doctor.

How does Omnilux for anti-aging differ from Omnilux for acne?

Omnilux for anti-ageing is specifically designed for anti-aging and skin-damage prevention. Omnilux for acne is specifically designed to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris. They utilize different wavelengths (colours) of light.

What wavelengths of light does Omnilux for acne use?

Omnilux utilizes red light (633nm) in combination with blue light (415nm).

I want to treat acne but also fine lines and wrinkles, which treatment should I do?

It is best to do a course of Omnilux treatments for both acne and for anti-ageing.

Can I use a light moisturiser before Omnilux treatments?

Skin should be clean and clear of any topicals, or substances prior to treatment. Apply your favorite moisturiser after treatment.

Will Omnilux make my pores smaller?

There is ample evidence that red light therapy (embedded in the Omnilux) will help reduce the appearance of pore size.

Can I use Omnilux if I am also on Accutane?

We do not recommend the use of light therapy devices while taking this medication. If you have stopped taking the medication for at least 5 days, the treatment can be safely administered. If you are unsure, please consult your prescribing physician.

I have severe acne, will Omnilux help with this?

Omnilux is intended to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris of the face. Omnilux is NOT indicated for severe acne. Please consult your Dermal Therapist for a more appropriate treatment.

Will Omnilux help with acne scarring?

Omnilux may help to reduce and soften the appearance of acne scarring.

Does Omnilux prevent future breakouts?

Omnilux significantly reduces the duration of current breakouts when used at the first sign of a breakout. Data also suggests that blue light therapy helps prevent future breakouts.

Is Omnilux safe for all ages?

Omnilux is intended for all persons over 14 years of age.

Does Omnilux allow you to use red and blue light independently?

Omnilux utilizes red light (633nm) and blue light (415nm) to treat acne. These light panels are alternated and used 2 days apart. Both wavelengths work in unison to treat mild to moderate acne.

Can I use Omnilux with products containing Salicylic acid?

You can continue to use a Salicylic gel and or face wash as part of your acne regime, however it is important that your skin is fully cleansed before each Omnilux treatment. In addition, those using skincare products containing Salicylic acid should read the skincare instructions carefully for any warnings and precautions in relation to exposure to light. If you are unsure if your skincare products are compatible with light therapy, please consult your Dermal Therapist prior to using Omnilux with Salicylic acid products.

Can I use Omnilux with products containing Benzoyl Peroxide?

Benzoyl Peroxide products typically have a drying effect on the skin so it is advised to use caution if using Omnilux with any over-the-counter products containing this ingredient. Do not apply any products to your skin prior to LED treatment. Those using skincare products containing Benzoyl Peroxide should read the skincare instructions carefully for any warnings and precautions in relation to exposure to light. If you are using prescription-strength Benzoyl Peroxide or are unsure if your skincare products are compatible with light therapy, please consult your Dermal Therapist prior to using Omnilux.
